We receive further insight into this story from Hosea 12:2-4:

The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah; He will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds. In the womb he grasped at his brother’s heel; as a man he struggled with God. He struggled with the Angel and overcame Him; he wept and begged for His favor. He found Him at Bethel and talked with Him there.”

Jacob fought the Angel until he broke down weeping. He then demanded a blessing from his opponent.

By asking the question, “What is your name?” the angel is not asking for the label that Jacob is known by, but rather how Jacob views himself as a person. Jacob responds with the deep realization, “I am a liar, deceiver, supplanter; this is who I am.” In that moment of realization and repentance, the angel responds with a new name and a new nature for Jacob: You are no longer Jacob; you are now Israel. You are no longer a liar; now you are a prince with God. What the angel said is not just a new label for Jacob. He changed his nature, his calling, and his destiny. God does the same thing for us, spiritually, when we repent of sins.
